Being an ore of iron it's also surprisingly heavy. Despite being quite hard, hematite is brittle so will chip or shatter easily.
Hematite is an iron oxide mineral and primary ore of iron. The name, which can also be spelt haematite (hee~matite), comes from the Greek word for blood. This came about because of the mineral's red streak.
Hematite is mined in some of the largest mines in the world. In some locations, more than one hundred million tons of ore are mined each year.
The red powder produced by hematite has long been used in cosmetics and as a pigment in paint. Cave paintings dating back 40,000 years were created using crushed hematite mixed with water.
