Agatized Dinosaur Bone

Dinosaur bone is a unique material formed through a process known as permineralization.  This is a process of fossilisation whereby minerals such as agate, quartz and pyrite replace organic matter in the original bone structure.

A second process called petrifaction takes place simultaneously.  Petrified wood is very similar to dinosaur bone.

'Petrifaction' comes from ancient Greek and loosely translated means "wood turned into stone".

Dinosaur bone is also sometimes referred to as agatized dinosaur bone.  This is because the organic matter has been replaced with agate.
