Dendritic Chalcedony Slices (Merlinite)
Being finely polished, these dendritic chalcedony slices have a smooth, silky texture and reflect light beautifully.
Dendritic chalcedony, often sold as 'Merlinite,' is a trade name also used for dendritic agate and dendritic opal. From a geological perspective, this is incorrect because agate and opal are two different materials.
Dendritic chalcedony is a variety of quartz containing distinctive fern- or tree-like inclusions, usually formed by manganese or iron oxides.
Dendritic opal is composed of opalised chalcedony mixed with manganese oxides, producing a mottled black-and-white appearance with dendritic patterns that can closely resemble dendritic agate.
Dendritic chalcedony (including material sold as Merlinite or dendritic agate) forms in silica-rich volcanic or sedimentary environments where mineral-bearing fluids penetrate cracks within the host rock. It's therefore relatively common.
