Bloodstone Crystals Beautifully Polished
Also known as heliotrope, bloodstone is a cryptocrystalline variety of quartz. Cryptocrystalline means its crystals (the literal meaning) are microscopic.
The deep red inclusions in bloodstone are caused by traces of iron, most likely from hematite.
With bloodstone being a fine-grained mineral it takes on a high polish. It's widely used for decorative purposes and its healing properties.
In the first century AD, bloodstone was claimed to preserve health and offer protection against deception. During the Middle Ages it was widely used for sculptures that depicted flogging, whipping, lashing and martyrdom.
The red markings were likened to blood hence were associated with the blood of Christ. For this reason it was often associated with the church and given religious importance.
Bloodstone was once used to prevent nosebleeds and as a remedy for haemorrhaging and inflammatory diseases. Today in crystal healing it's still used primarily for disorders relating to the blood.
