Fine grade banded agate crystals tumbled from material mined in Botswana. These stones have a vitreous lustre so reflect light in a similar way to glass.
Agate is a variety of quartz but more specifically a variety of chalcedony distinguished by its colour and banded structure. The variation of colours and patterns in which it occurs plus the fact it's relatively tough makes it ideal for cutting and polishing.
Banded agate is one of the most common varieties and probably the most easy to recognise.
Many agates have their own unique name. This often includes an identifying characteristic or indication as to the stone's origin. Examples include banded agate, Brazil agate and dendritic agate to name just a few.
Agate generally occurs in shades of black, grey, red or brown with banding mostly being white or grey. It can also be exceptionally colourful.
