Beautiful mookaite jasper sphere, highly polished and with a fascinating variation of rich warm colours. This extra large size sphere weighs just over one kilogramme and is being displayed on a hematite ring. These make ideal supports for spheres of most sizes. The ring is not included in the price but may be purchased separately. Hematite is a relatively hard mineral but also brittle so if dropped or knocked it will chip or shatter.
Mookaite is a variety of the mineral jasper that's sometimes also known as Australian Jasper or Mook Jasper. Originally given the name by locals simply for identification purposes, the name stuck and is now widely used and recognised around the world. Surprisingly the name mookaite has never been officially registered.
Named after Mooka Creek which is the location in Western Australia where this stone is mined, mookaite is widely used for decorative purposes and being graded 6½ to 7 on Mohs scale of mineral hardness makes it relatively easy stone to cut and polish.
Mookaite jasper is known for its striking variation of colour which often includes hues of red, orange, green and yellow. A subtle splash of blue is also present which is rarely seen in jasper.
