Rough kyanite mineral, a relatively large and chunky piece from our collection of rocks and minerals.Kyanite is translucent so when illuminated from behind this piece exhibits impressive colour. Kyanite often occurs as long bladed crystals and it's quite a unique mineral. Not only can it feature zones of colour but it has a different hardness within the same crystal. When tested lengthways it grades 4.5 to 6 on Mohs scale of mineral hardness but when tested across the width it grades 6 to 7.This characteristic along with the fact that kyanite is also very brittle, makes it a very difficult stone to cut. For this reason it's not used that often as a gemstone. The mineral kyanite is widely used in industry primarily because of its hardness but also because of its ability to resist heat.
