Prasiolite Crystals from Chevron Amethyst
Although sold as prasiolite or green amethyst, both names are incorrect for this stone.
Green amethyst is a misnomer because the word 'amethyst' is a geological term for the purple variety of quartz.
Although the exact shade can vary, sometimes considerably, amethyst doesn't occur in any other colour.
Natural prasiolite, sometimes called green amethyst, albeit incorrectly, does exist but is extremely rare.
Generally, when amethyst is heated it turns yellow, but some amethyst from a small number of locations turns a shade of green. This material is often used to mimic natural prasiolite.
The natural green colour of prasiolite, which is very subtle, is produced through radiation.
Virtually all imitation prasiolite comes from Brazil.
In recent years, chevron amethyst (also known as banded amethyst) has started being sold as prasiolite. The stone is coloured either through a heat treatment or possibly using some form of dye.
Our prasiolite crystals are a medium tumbled stones. Size can vary from piece to piece.
