Smoky quartz is relatively hard but also brittle. The smokey brown colour comes from radiation in surrounding rock that interacts with impurities of aluminium.
The colour of smoky quartz crystals can vary from a light shade of brown to yellowish-brown to almost black. They can also have a slightly greyish appearance although this material is not particularly popular. Very dark coloured material is known as morion.
Smoky quartz will fade if exposed to excessive heat or bright sunlight.
