The deposit in Madagascar where Ocean Jasper was first discovered is at sea level along the country's rugged coastline. It was initially only accessible by boat at low tide, which made mining extremely difficult.
When large-scale mining began in 1999, no proper roads led to the site. Therefore, the stone was extracted using hand tools and transported by sea.
The unique patterns and colours of Ocean Jasper formed over millions of years as silica-rich solutions and mineral impurities seeped into volcanic rock cavities.
