Madeira Quartz Crystals (Citrine)
Madeira quartz is a trade name for heated amethyst with a slightly richer yellow to yellow-orange colour. Most commercial-grade citrine is heated amethyst.
Natural citrine is quite rare, so it can be expensive.
When amethyst is heated to more than 500°C (932°F), it changes colour. For this reason, this purple variety of quartz is often heated to imitate citrine.
The name Madeira Quartz, which has only appeared quite recently, seems to have been introduced as an alternative to the lighter yellow-coloured heated amethyst more commonly sold as citrine.
These highly polished quartz crystals have a vitreous lustre, so reflect light in a similar way to glass. They're mostly translucent and some stones exhibit subtle iridescence.
