Rare Ocean Jasper from Madagascar
A large gem-grade ocean jasper cabochon cut for us from a rough piece of stone.
Ocean jasper which can only be found in Madagascar is completely mined out. Gemstones in this size and grade are exceptionally rare.
A variety of orbicular jasper which refers to its distinctive orb-like markings.
Although ocean jasper was initially discovered in the 1950's the location of the mine which was only visible during low tide was poorly documented. The deposit was therefore quickly lost. It was rediscovered in 1999. No material worth mining has been found in the original deposit for many years.
The front of this large ocean jasper cabochon is highly polished. The back is unpolished.
