Ocean Jasper from Madagascar
A large gem-grade ocean jasper cabochon cut for Stone Mania from rough.
Ocean jasper which can only be found in Madagascar is completely mined out. Gemstones of this size and grade are exceptionally rare.
Ocean jasper is variety of orbicular jasper.
Although ocean jasper was initially discovered in the 1950's, the location of the mine was incorrectly documented. The deposit was therefore quickly lost.
It was rediscovered in 1999.
No material worth mining has been found in the original deposit for many years.
The front of this ocean jasper cabochon has been beautifully polished. The back is unpolished. It has been very finely cut.
The edge around the base of the gemstone does a few very minor indentations. They can be felt more than be seen and are not visible from the top of the stone.
