Glass Fibre Love Hearts
We picked up these bright yellow love hearts on a recent buying trip to South Africa. We only have four available.
Glass fibre love hearts are made from ultra-fine glass fibres. As the heart reflects light a strong chatoyant effect can be seen.
Chatoyance is an optical phenomenon that occurs in various natural minerals including chrysoberyl and tigers eye.
Once the glass fibres have been moulded into the desired shape they're polished to create a smooth and highly reflective surface.
As light reflects off the glass fibre inclusions a distinctive band of concentrated light can be seen.
The visual effect cannot be reproduced in a photo but it's really quite captivating.
Some retailers state these love hearts have been cut from cats eye. Cats eye is a trade name for a yellowish coloured chrysoberyl that exhibits chatoyance.
Chrysoberyl is a natural mineral, glass fibre is man-made.
