Mother-of-pearl is composed primarily of the mineral aragonite with traces of an organic substance called conchiolin. Black mother-of-pearl is sourced from the black-lip pearl oyster, known scientifically as Pinctada margaritifera.
This iridescent shell, produced only by certain molluscs, reflects light from different angles. As the stone is moved, the amount of visible black changes.
