Dinosaur Bone Cabochon Gemstone
Dinosaur Bone gemstones are not seen that often. It's also known as agatized dinosaur bone which is a more accurate description of what it is.
Dinosaur Bone forms through permineralization. This is a process of fossilisation that involves various minerals replacing the organic tissue in the original dinosaur bone. The next stage of the process is known as petrifaction. The word petrified from Ancient Greek meaning "wood turned into stone".
What actually happens is dissolved minerals being carried by groundwater fill voids in the original dinosaur bone. As the water dries up the minerals are left behind and begin to crystallise.
Petrified wood forms through a very similar process.
The vast majority of dinosaur bone is found in Utah and Colorado.
This dinosaur bone gemstone has been slightly reduced because of a very small indentation on the lower edge of the stone. With it already being finely cut it would not have been possible to polish this out. It can just about be seen in our last photo.
