Clear Quartz Crystal Towers
These quartz crystal towers were cut and polished in Brazil. Both exhibit excellent clarity and are virtually inclusion-free.
Clear quartz is also known as rock crystal.
Quartz with this level of clarity forms in hydrothermal environments deep underground, where silica-rich fluids slowly crystallise over time.
It forms under very stable conditions, where chemically pure fluids with minimal impurities are present. A steady temperature and slow, undisturbed growth are also necessary.
Open space allows crystals to grow freely, reducing the likelihood of inclusions and fractures.
A natural variation in clarity is relatively common. Cloudier areas can be caused by microscopic inclusions, while clearer sections, often towards the tip, will have formed under more stable conditions.
Clear quartz towers are usually cut from massive quartz, rather than from terminated crystals. This is often a large piece of rough quartz with usable clear zones.
Due to their shape, a considerable amount of quartz is lost during cutting and polishing. This is why premium-grade crystals tend to command a higher price, particularly for larger sizes.
