Sunstone, also known as Heliolite is a Feldspar which exhibits a fascinating spangled appearance which is known as aventurescence. This optical effect is due to the presence of tiny platelets of included minerals such as Goethite or Hematite. The name Heliolite comes from the Greek 'helios' meaning 'sun' and 'lithos' meaning 'stone' but this name is rarely used anymore with Sunstone or Aventurine Feldspar being more common.
Goldstone is a common imitation of Sunstone due to the spangled effect that it shares, however Goldstone is man-made.
In crystal healing, Sunstone is said to be a strong protection gemstone which increases the power of your personal attraction. It can be used to clear and energize the chakras and can also be used to dissipate fear and alleviate stress. Sunstone has been used to encourage independence and originality and is said to provide luck in gaming.
In Ancient Greece it was thought to represent the sun God, bringing life and abundance to those fortunate enough to carry or wear it. It was also often used for ornamental purposes on goblets and plates as it was believed to counteract the effects of poison and to produce strength. In ancient India it was believed to offer protection from the destructive forces of other realms.
Medicinally, Sunstone is said to help with chronic sore throats and to reduce stomach tension and relieve ulcers. It can also be used in the treatment of cartilage problems.
Sunstone comes mainly from India, Canada, Norway, China, United States (in particular Oregon) and Russia, fine grade gemstones can be extremely difficult to find and they can also be very expensive.
Being graded 6 to 6.5 on Mohs scale of mineral hardness makes it ideal for use in jewellery.
