Ocean Jasper tumbled stones boasting wonderful earthy colours and distinctive spherical markings. Sadly existing supplies of Ocean Jasper are now beginning to dry up and as this rare stone becomes more difficult to source, prices will undoubtedly rise. Ocean Jasper which is a type of Orbicular Jasper can only be found in Madagascar. The original mine which was discovered in the 1950's has been mined to exhaustion and alternative locations which have subsequently been discovered have now also dried up.
Although Ocean Jasper has always been considered to be a rare variety of Orbicular Jasper, the theory is now being challenged as new research suggests this stone may actually be a type of chalcedony.
This distinctive stone is used primarily as a lapidary material and particularly as a gemstone. It takes on a high polish and is often transformed into tumbled stones which are popular with people interested in crystals, rocks and minerals. As a gemstone it tends to be cut as a cabochon and spheres and figurines are also popular. On Mohs scale of mineral hardness Ocean Jasper grades 6½ to 7.
