Beautiful and incredibly tactile, banded amethyst tumbled stones carefully chosen before being imported by Stone Mania from South Africa.
Purple coloured quartz is correctly known as amethyst and banded amethyst is just a slightly different variety. In its purest form the mineral quartz is colourless but when impurities of iron and manganese are present it changes colour. The exact shade of purple can vary significantly depending on how much iron and manganese is present but heat during the stone's early formation also plays an important part .
Amethyst is a highly prized variety of quartz which is well known around the world but banded amethyst does not attract anywhere near as much attention. A distinctive mineral that's included with milky-white quartz, it's readily available and is mainly used as a gemstone, for carving purposes or for tumbled stones. The inclusions of white quartz often occur in "chevron-like" patterns which is why it's sometimes known as Chevron Amethyst. This name is widely used in America but rarely in the UK.
These banded amethyst tumbled stones are beautiful quality and exhibit rich purple colour nestled between bands of opaque quartz. Amethyst is well known as the birthstone for the month of February.
