Sodalite Crystals (orange)
Sodalite Crystals with Orange Calcite
Royal blue sodalite crystals included with a splash of orange calcite. Premium grade tumbled stones, highly polished and exceptionally tactile.
Sodalite was first discovered in 1806 during the Napoleonic war when a large quantity was sent to Denmark from Greenland. Originally named because of its high sodium content, sodalite is a relatively light weight mineral yet on Mohs scale of mineral hardness it grades 5½ to 6. Despite its hardness it's also brittle which can make cutting quite difficult.
Due to the similarity in colour the bluer varieties of sodalite have been known to be sold as fake lapis lazuli because not only is it more readily available, it's also considerably cheaper. The difference in weight would make it quite easy to distinguish one stone from the other plus it's rare to find lapis that's completely void of inclusions of pyrite. Ironically along with several other minerals, sodalite is a constituent of lapis lazuli.
These beautiful sodalite crystals are ideal for use in alternative therapies such as crystal healing or would certainly make an eye-catching and wonderfully colourful display.
These fine grade sodalite crystals range in size from small to medium and as with all tumbled stones, no two pieces are the same. Approximate weights and sizes can be found below.
