Chrysoprase Green Variety of Quartz
Magnificent chrysoprase tumbled stones from our collection of crystals rocks and minerals.
Chrysoprase is a variety of the mineral quartz which boasts an impressive apple green colour although the exact shade of colour can vary from one stone to the next. Although widely used for lapidary purposes because of its colour, it should be noted that chrysoprase can fade if the stone is exposed to excessive heat or direct sunlight for long periods of time.
Although the finest grades of chrysoprase once came from Poland and the Czech Republic formerly Czechoslovakia, it now tends to be mined primarily in Australia, Russia, USA and Brazil.
Believed to have been named by the Ancient Greeks after the vegetable that we know today as leek due to the similarity in colour, chrysoprase can range from being almost opaque to highly translucent. The finest grade gems are often confused for jade and it's not unheard of for agate that has been dyed to be passed off as chrysoprase.
Weights and sizes of these fine grade chrysoprase crystals varies slightly from piece to piece but they are a medium to large sized tumbled stone.
