Chevron Amethyst Crystals
Chevron Amethyst Tumbled Crystals
Highly polished chevron amethyst tumbled stones from South Africa. Incredibly tactile grade A stones available to buy individually or in larger quantities.
Amethyst which is a purple variety of the mineral quartz is known for exhibiting different shades of colour within the same crystal. This characteristic is correctly known as colour zoning and chevron amethyst is the most extreme example. The name of this stone came about because of its distinctive chevron or v-shaped patterns although in the UK it's often referred to as banded amethyst.
In its purest form quartz is colourless but when impurities of iron and manganese are present the colour of the crystal begins to change. The exact shade of purple can vary significantly depending on how much iron and manganese is present and heat during the stone's early formation also plays a part. The colour variation in chevron amethyst is a perfect example although the difference in colour in most amethyst crystals is considerably more subtle.
The mineral amethyst has long been prized for its rich purple colour and is widely used as a lapidary material. Sadly chevron amethyst has never attracted quite as much attention.
A relatively hard stone which grades 7 on Mohs scale of mineral hardness, amethyst is the birthstone for the month of February.
