Quartz has evolved over millions of years and is the most diverse mineral in terms of varieties, colours and forms.  It has been used by man for thousands of years and as well as being highly sought after by collectors, is widely used in industry.

In its purest form the mineral quartz is colourless and transparent.

Also known as quartz crystal, crystal quartz or rock crystal, the term "crystal clear" came about because of its clarity.  Only quartz in its purest form is correctly known as rock crystal.

The presence of impurities is the reason why quartz occurs in so many colours.  Many of these varieties which often have their own name tend to be translucent as opposed to transparent.
