Crystal Clear Double Terminated Quartz

A perfectly clear quartz crystal from our collection of rocks and minerals.

This double terminated piece features some fascinating inclusions.  With the reflection of light from certain angles subtle iridescence can be seen.

The colour that can be seen in some of the crystal faces is refraction of light.  When light bends (or refracts) it enables us to see a spectrum of colours.

This is because daylight correctly known as white light is made up of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. When these colours combine the human eye only sees white.

Light only refracts when it enters a different medium at an angle. The bending or change of direction is caused as the speed at which light is travelling changes.

This crystal was photographed in natural daylight.  No other lighting was used.
