sugilite 1

Sugilite which is also known as luvulite although this name is not as common, is a relatively new mineral which first appeared in Japan in 1944.  It was named after Professor Kenichi Sugi, the geologist who originally discovered it.   Although Sugilite was also discovered in India some years later, neither of these occurrences were sufficient in quantity or fine enough in grade, to make them desirable.

In 1975 the third and most important occurrence took place in the Wessels Mine in the Southern Kalahari Desert, South Africa.  The part of the mine where this original sample was obtained contained only low grade material so serious excavation of the area did not begin until 1979.  Once below the Earth’s surface at 3,200 feet, an inclined shaft's roof fell in and exposed the first major deposit of gem-grade Sugilite.  This chance find produced about five thousand kilograms of gemstone quality material most of which has now been mined.  Small amounts do still occasionally become available but when they do, it’s extremely difficult to get hold of and can be very expensive.

Most people pronounce Sugilite with a soft 'g' as in 'genius' but in fact the correct pronunciation is with a hard 'g' as in 'gold'.

In crystal healing Sugilite is said to strengthen the heart, aid physical healing and reduce stress.  It is a balancer of the mind, body and spirit and encourages peace of mind and a general feeling of well-being and spiritual love.  It protects against the harsh realities of life and can also help one to believe more in themself.  It can help eliminate hostility, anger, jealousy and prejudice along with almost all other negative emotions.  Sugilite is also said to be an excellent remedy for headaches.

Graded 7 on Mohs scale of mineral hardness, Sugilite is one of the major ‘love stones’, it represents spiritual love and wisdom and opens all of the chakras to the flow of that love bringing them into alignment.  This crystal finds answers to all the great questions of life such as ‘Why am I here?’  A loving stone which protects the soul from shock, trauma and disappointment it can help bring light and love into the darkest of situations.  It’s useful for those who work with groups as it resolves the difficulties which often arise and encourages love and communication.  On an emotional level, it imparts the ability to face up to unpleasant matters.  It alleviates sorrow, grief and fear and promotes self- forgiveness.  Mentally it encourages positive thoughts and reorganises brain patterns that underlie learning difficulties such as dyslexia.  Sugilite is particularly beneficial for those who suffer from cancer as it gently releases emotional turmoil and can alleviate despair.  It draws off negative energy and lends loving support, channelling healing energy into the mind, body and spirit.  It helps resolve inner pain hence is helpful for children who have been adopted and feel they have been rejected by their birth parents and can help bring balance to food related addictions and compulsions such as excessive alcohol, gambling or out of control spending.
