Smoky Quartz Facts and Photos
The Mineral Smoky Quartz
Smoky quartz is one of only a few black or brown coloured minerals from which gemstones are cut. Others include black beryl which is relatively rare and brown corundum.
Colour of this distinctive variety of the mineral quartz can vary from light brown to yellowish brown to a shade of brown so dark it almost appears to be black. A translucent mineral which like most varieties of quartz often forms large crystals with few inclusions. With smoky quartz being so widely available it's generally not a particularly expensive mineral.
Cairngorm is a variety of smoky quartz mined on Cairn Gorm which is a mountain in the eastern Highlands of Scotland. Stones from this location have a smoky yellowish brown colour but may also be greyish brown.
When used for its healing properties smoky quartz has the ability to transform negative energy and is particularly effective for dealing with anger and resentment. It's useful for alleviating panic attacks, anxiety and nightmares and brings deep emotional calmness.
The mineral smoky quartz can be found in several locations worldwide including Australia, Brazil, India, Kazakhstan, Madagascar, Russia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Tanzania, Ukraine, Switzerland and USA.
