What Exactly is Rose Quartz?

Rose quartz which is a pink variety of the mineral quartz is an unmistakable stone which can be found in several countries around the world.  Surprisingly pink is one of the less common colours in which quartz occurs.

Rose quartz rarely forms individual crystals and is mostly found in massive form.  The crystal habit described as massive means crystals grow as one large mass and are so tightly intergrown they have no definitive shape.  This is quite unusual considering that most varieties of quartz exhibit well formed crystals.  There is however a pink coloured quartz which does form individual crystals but it's generally believed that pink quartz as it's often known to distinguish one from the other, is a variety of quartz in its own right.  Apart from this mineral being rare, it forms in a different environment, the cause of its pink colour is believed to be from the presence of aluminium and phosphorus and the colour is extremely sensitive to light.

Although the colour of the rose quartz that occurs in massive form is considered to be stable, there have been occasional reports of stones that have turned pale relatively quickly after being exposed to daylight. Individual crystals in this form of rose quartz have never been discovered.

The Pink Colour of Rose Quartz

The colour of the mineral rose quartz is quite unique and has been a subject of great debate for many years.  Despite extensive analysis scientists are still not certain what causes the pink colour.  The most popular theory is the presence of microscopic fibrous inclusions related to a mineral very similar to dumortierite.  During tests when the inclusions of dumortierite were separated from the rose quartz they were found to exhibit exactly the same colour hence it's believed they are likely to be the cause.

Rose Quartz Rarely Faceted

Rose quartz is used primarily for decorative purposes and the finest specimens are highly sought after by collectors.  Rose quartz gemstones despite being translucent tend to be shaped as cabochons because when faceted, the stone becomes slightly cloudy.  Beads that were found in Mesopotamia (modern day Iraq) date back to 7000 BC and rose quartz is also believed to have been used by the Assyrians in 800 - 600 BC.  Although also used by the Romans it was mainly for making seals.

A relatively hard stone which grades 7 on Mohs scale of mineral hardness, rose quartz can be found in a few countries around the world but the vast majority of the world's supply comes from Brazil.  The variety known as pink quartz can only be found in Brazil.

Healing Properties of Rose Quartz

In crystal healing rose quartz is considered to be the ultimate stone of love and is the most important crystal for healing of the heart.  A romantic stone which purifies and opens the heart to attract love and bring more love into our lives.  Rose quartz insprires warmth, attraction and new friendships.  It's a great emotional healer particularly for deep inner healing and for learning how to love yourself.  Its calming energies make it suitable for reassurance and for use in a crisis or any traumatic situation.

No home should be without a small collection of rose quartz.  Placing stones close to your bed will keep an existing relationship strong, restore trust and harmony and encourage unconditional love.  Rose quartz removes negative energy and replaces it with gentle love and respect for the world around you.  One of the finest of all healers, it helps to release difficult emotions and heartache, soothes mental pain and enables you to let go and move forward.

For those who have lost in love rose quartz will offer comfort to deal with the pain and teach you how to learn to love yourself.  It's especially beneficial for those who feel they can't be loved.  Rose quartz strengthens mind body and spirit and radiates positive energy.
