Amethyst Silver Jewellery On Sale
Rich purple coloured amethyst crystal mounted as a ladied pendant in a fine sterling silver setting. Amethyst is one of the most widely used varieties of the mineral quartz and when used as a gemstone it may be faceted or polished as a cabochon. A highly translucent mineral whose colour can change quite dramatically when illuminated from behind, it exhibits a vitreous lustre which means the surface of the stone interacts with light in a similar way to glass.
The purple colouration in amethyst is caused by impurities of iron and manganese. Stones are sensitive to light and will fade if exposed for long periods of time to natural sunlight. Amethyst is also sensitive to heat and much of the world's commercial grade citrine is produced by heating amethyst.
With the exception of our last photograph the rest have been taken using studio lighting which enables us to capture the true colour of the stone. As the last two photographs show, when illuminated from behind the stone really is quite magical. The reason for this amethyst pendant being added to our Jewellery Sale is because there is a very small indentation on one side of the cabochon but you'll really need to look really closely to see it. This minor anomaly is on the upper left side.
Our ladies gemstone are all hand-made by one of a small team of artisans with whom we have been working for almost twenty years. The setting for this amethyst cabochon is sterling silver.
