Amethyst Crystal Necklace Jewellery Sale

Ladies amethyst pendant crafted entirely by hand in a simple sterling silver setting.  This piece is being offered for sale at a dramatically reduced price because the workmanship on the silver setting was not completed quite as well as we would have liked.  It certainly doesn't spoil the pendant and we believe had it not been mentioned it's possible it would not have even been noticed.

The amethyst cabochon in this ladies pendant exhibits the most subtle purple colour but it captured our attention because it's a perfect example from a geological perspective of how this mineral forms.

The colour in the finest grade of amethyst is well saturated and uniform throughout but that's not easy to find in this variety of quartz because it's prone to colour zoning.  This term refers to the fact that different shades of colour will often occur within the same crystal and chevron amethyst is the most extreme example.

The subtle wisps of purple colour in this amethyst gemstone shows what happens when insufficient amounts of iron are present within the crystal structure.  Impurities of iron in quartz are the reason it turns purple and the presence of the element manganese affects depth and shade of colour.  When people think of amethyst they expect to see a distinctively purple stone and because it's so readily available, the process that takes place in order for it to form is sometimes taken for granted.

These crystals form over millions of years and sufficient amounts of iron need to be present to create a uniform colour.  A number of other natural geological processes are also required and may include heat, irradiation and pressure.

The fact that this amethyst crystal is still largely colourless demonstrates how colourless quartz changes into purple amethyst.  When held up towards the light even more detail can be seen.

This highly translucent amethyst crystal makes a fascinating piece of jewellery at a totally unbeatable price.
