Shungite Tumbled Stones
Shungite tumbled stones imported by Stone Mania directly from Karelia in Russia which is the world's main supplier of this curious mineraloid. Early studies were carried out on material from a deposit close to Shunga Village which is how the name shungite came about. Although it's reported that it can also be found in a few other locations around the world, the Lake Onega region of Karelia in north west Russia is by far the most well known.
A rare form of non crystalline carbon that contains traces of fullerene, shungite is highly sought after for use in alternative therapies such as crystal healing. This unique material is known to be at least two billion years old and when tumbled, has an unusual and distinctive texture and is surprisingly light weight.
Shungite is correctly classified as a mineraloid not a mineral because it does not have a significant crystal structure. Other examples of mineraloids include obsidian which is volcanic glass, pearl, moldavite which is a tektite and amber to name just a few.
Tumbled shungite is a lower grade material than elite shungite hence is also less expensive. These interesting stones come in different shapes and sizes and exhibit a dull lustre. This term is used to describe the way that light interacts with the surface of the stone. Dull means that it absorbs light whilst vitreous means it reflects light in a similar way to glass.
Elite shungite is the finest grade material that's available hence is not used for tumbling. Stones are either sold individually or carved into a variety of objects including spheres and figurines. Elite shungite is sold by weight, it's considerably more expensive than tumbled stones but is believed to contain a higher percentage of carbon.
It's quite difficult to approximate the size for our shungite tumbled stones because they come in so many different shapes. We have however given a range of weights but please note, they do vary slightly from piece to piece.
Weight Range (grams) : 4 - 7 (medium) 8 - 11 (large)
