Orbicular Jasper is a distinctive variety of jasper that can be identified by its orb-like spherical markings. A popular lapidary material that takes on a high polish, it's also widely for carving and other ornamental purposes. Several different varieties of Orbicular Jasper can be found around the world but Ocean Jasper from Madagascar is possibly the most well known.
Although often described as mineral jasper is in fact a rock or to be more precise, a silicified quartz-rich rock. The prominent rounded markings make Orbicular Jasper particularly unique and like many varieties of jasper, it can exhibit exceptional colour. Poppy Jasper from California is another variety of Orbicular Jasper although not as rare as the stone from Madagascar which is now almost completely mined out.
