the mineral cordierite

Cordierite is a distinctive blue to violet coloured mineral that's named after French geologist Louis Cordier who first discovered it in 1813.  It has few uses in industry and is mostly used as a gemstone.  Iolite is the name that's used for translucent gem grade cordierite.
