Varieties of orbicular jasper can be found in several locations around the world but ocean jasper from Madagascar is possibly the most well known. Another well known variety is poppy jasper from Morgan Hill, Santa Clara County California.
Although often described as mineral jasper is really a rock because instead of being made up crystals it's made up primarily of the mineral quartz.
The prominent rounded markings are what make varieties of orbicular jasper particularly unique. Jasper is almost always opaque because as much as 20% of its chemical composition is other minerals and substances.
