Large and chunky septarian pendant crafted by hand in a fine sterling silver setting. Septarian cabochons of this size are rarely seen in items of jewellery but we absolutely love using the larger stones in our pendants. Septarian is a popular lapidary material but due to the fact that it's partly made up of clay, when used as a gemstone it can be very slightly heavier. With that said, we're well aware that nobody wants to wear a heavy stone around their neck so the pieces we choose are carefully selected.
This highly polished gemstone boasts slightly translucent yellow calcite crystals alongside the mineral aragonite and also limestone. Septarian is a kind of prehistoric mud ball that's known to have formed during the Cretaceous Period which started around 145 million years ago. Also known as a septarian nodule or concretion, these curious structures continue to frustrate geologists because certain aspects relating to exactly how they formed is still not fully understood.
