A larger and slightly chunkier rhodochrosite pendant from our collection of crystals rocks and minerals. This highly polished cabochon boasts exceptional markings on both sides of the stone, it's surprisingly tactile and was carefully chosen by one of the team at Stone Mania.
Rhodochrosite is often confused with the mineral rhodonite not because they look alike but because of the similarity in the name. Both are popular lapidary materials whose colour occurs in various shades of red.
Rhodochrosite has been mined in Argentina since the time of the Incas but some of the world's most beautiful specimens come from the Sweet Home Mine in Colorado which closed down in 2004.
Although red and translucent in its purest form, the most common colour for rhodochrosite is actually pink and the opaque material is what most people are familiar with. Despite its popularity as a gemstone, rhodochrosite is a soft stone which grades just 3½ to 4 on Mohs scale of mineral hardness hence it can be extremely challenging to cut and must also be handled with care.
This impressive rhodochrosite pendant makes a striking piece of ladies jewellery but be sure to keep it covered whenever it's not being worn. Not only will this help to protect the gemstone but it will also help reduce the build up of tarnish on the sterling silver setting.
