A slightly larger and chunkier rhodochrosite pendant from our collection of crystals, rocks and minerals. This highly polished cabochon boasts exceptional markings on both sides of the stone, it's surprisingly tactile and was carefully chosen by one of the team here at Stone Mania.
Rhodochrosite is often confused with rhodonite because of the similarity of the two names but although both are manganese minerals whose colour occurs in various shades of red, their appearance is actually quite different.
Rhodochrosite has been mined in Argentina since the time of the Incas but some of the world's most beautiful specimens come from the Sweet Home Mine in Colorado which closed in 2004.
Although red and translucent in its purest form, the most common colour for this mineral is actually pink. The reddish pink opaque stones are what most people are familiar with and it's these stones that are widely used for lapidary purposes and in particular as gemstones for use in ladies jewellery. What few people are aware of however is that rhodochrosite is a very soft mineral which grades just 3½ to 4 on Mohs scale of mineral hardness hence it can be extremely challenging to cut and must be handled very carefully.
This impressive rhodochrosite pendant makes a striking piece of jewellery but be sure to keep it protected whenever it's not being worn. Keeping this piece wrapped in a soft clean cloth will not only help to protect the cabochon but will also help prevent the sterling silver from tarnishing.
