Red Tigers Eye Pendant
Surprisingly this deep reddish brown coloured stone is red tigers eye and it is as its name suggests, a type of tigers eye. Although best known as being a brown coloured stone, tigers eye changes colour when exposed to heat hence different colours can be created by heating it to different temperatures. As well as turning a deep shade of reddish brown, tigers eye also turns black and black tigers eye is another very distinctive gemstone.
The mineral tigers eye is well known for an optical phenomenon known as chatoyancy and whilst it can also be seen in black tigers eye, it is no longer present once the stone turns red. Although enhancing or changing the colour completely of gemstones using heat may to some sound like cheating, this practice has been carried out in one form or another for thousands of years and was even documented by the Ancient Greek philosopher Theophrastus (c.370 - 285 BC) in his treatise Theophrastus On Stones.
This beautifully polished cabochon makes an outstanding ladies pendant and has been mounted in a hand crafted sterling silver setting. It should be mentioned that on the back of this cabochon there is an indentation where the stone was polished down slightly to remove an anomaly. This minor imperfection has been taken into consideration when calculating the price of this red tigers eye pendant.
