Red Obsidian Pendant
Red obsidian gemstone pendant crafted in a simple sterling silver setting. Although a slightly larger piece, this ladies pendant is relatively light weight because red obsidian is not as heavy as many other natural stones. Obsidian is correctly classified as a mineraloid because it does not have a crystal structure. Obsidian is volcanic glass which forms when magma comes into contact with the surface of the earth and cools so quickly that crystals do not have time to grow.
The colours and markings in obsidian change depending on the inclusions and impurities that are present. The reddish brown colouration in red obsidian is caused by the presence of hematite which is the mineral form of iron oxide, also known as rust. Being natural glass obsidian it is quite fragile and will shatter if knocked or dropped. On the reverse side of this stone there are two indentations where fine slices of obsidian have broken away. This clearly took place whilst the pendant was being crafted but does not affect the quality of the stone and will not lead to any further cracking or breakage. This damage is purely aesthetic and has been taken in consideration whilst calculating a price for this red obsidian pendant.
Red obsidian may also be known as mahogany obsidian and this is one of only a very small number of pieces that we currently have available in our collection.
