The very subtle shades of green and yellow in this onyx pendant make it an ideal piece of jewellery to wear during the warm summer months. It's highly translucent and has a vitreous lustre so interacts with the light beautifully. Crafted by hand exclusively for Stone Mania in a fine sterling silver setting, this cabochon has been artificially coloured.
Onyx is a variety of agate which features straight, alternating black and white bands that run parallel to each other. It's a translucent stone which is actually quite rare but is often produced by using pale coloured agate. Agate and onyx are both varieties of the mineral chalcedony but unlike onyx, the bands in agate are curved and often form chaotic patterns. When onyx occurs with red and white bands it's known as carnelian and sardonyx is the correct name for the stone when banding is brown and white.
Onyx was popular in Ancient Rome where it was used to carve magnificent cameos That fact that it's porous means it has throughout history been dyed and this practice continues today. Although black onyx does occur naturally it is extremely rare so the vast majority is the result of dyeing. Very rarely does onyx occur in any one single colour.
Although slightly larger, this onyx pendant is light weight and has a slim design. There is an indentation that runs vertically along the centre band on the back of the gemstone which has some dark colouration just below the surface. This can be seen very slightly from the front but certainly doesn't spoil this piece. We have however taken this into consideration when calculating a price and in the unlikely event that you are not entirely happy with this onyx pendant, it may like any other product that you purchase from us, be returned for a full refund (T&C's apply).
