The very subtle shades of green and yellow in this onyx pendant make it an ideal piece to wear during the warm summer months. This striking gemstone is highly translucent with a vitreous lustre so interacts with the light beautifully. Crafted by hand exclusively for Stone Mania in a fine sterling silver setting, this is a natural stone which has been artificially coloured.
Onyx is a variety of agate which features straight, alternating black and white bands that run parallel to each other. It's a translucent mineral which is actually quite rare so is often produced using pale coloured agate. Both onyx and agate are varieties of the mineral chalcedony but unlike onyx the bands in agate are curved and often form chaotic patterns. When onyx occurs with red and white bands it's known as carnelian and when stones exhibit brown or white coloured bands the name sardonyx is used.
Onyx was popular in Ancient Rome where it was used to carve magnificent cameos. As a result of it being porous it has throughout history been dyed and this practice continues today so this gemstone can be found in almost any colour. Although black onyx does occur naturally it is extremely rare so the vast majority has been dyed. Very rarely does onyx occur in any one single colour.
Although slightly larger this onyx pendant is light weight and has a relatively slim design. There is an indentation that runs vertically along the centre band on the back of the cabochon which has some dark colouration just below the surface. It's a natural anomaly which can be seen very slightly from the front but certainly doesn't spoil the stone. We have however taken this into consideration when calculating a price and in the unlikely event that you are not entirely happy with this onyx pendant, it may like any other product that you purchase from Stone Mania be returned for a full refund (T&C's apply).
