Red Obsidian Pendant
Obsidian Ladies Pendant
Red obsidian gemstone pendant crafted in a simple sterling silver setting. Although slightly larger this ladies pendant is relatively light weight because obsidian is natural glass hence is not as heavy as many other natural stones. Obsidian is correctly classified as a mineraloid because it does not have a crystal structure, it is in fact volcanic glass which formed as magma came into contact with the surface of the earth and cooled so quickly that crystals didn't have time to grow.
The colours and markings in obsidian change depending on the inclusions and impurities that are present. The reddish brown colouration in red obsidian is caused by the presence of hematite which is the mineral form of iron oxide, also known as rust. Being natural glass obsidian is quite fragile and will shatter if knocked or dropped. On the reverse side of this stone there are two indentations where fine slices of obsidian have broken away. This clearly took place whilst the pendant was being crafted but does not affect the quality of the stone and will not lead to any further cracking or breakage. This damage is purely aesthetic and has been taken in consideration whilst calculating a price for this red obsidian pendant.
Red obsidian is also sometimes known as mahogany obsidian.
