Ocean Jasper Pendant
Impressive Ocean Jasper Pendant
Ocean Jasper pendant featuring a large and wonderfully distinctive polished cabochon mounted in fine sterling silver.
Ocean Jasper which comes exclusively from Madagascar has always been believed to be a type of Orbicular Jasper but new research suggests it could be a type of chalcedony. Jasper tends to be an opaque rock because it's made up of a high percentage of other materials and substances yet this latest research has shown that some varieties of Ocean Jasper display a degree of translucency which has raised questions about whether it is genuinely a jasper.
The mines from where Ocean Jasper is sourced are now virtually depleted which means there's no gem grade material left available to mine. Cabochons of this size and grade are few and far between which is sad because they definitely make magnificent pieces of jewellery. As Ocean Jasper becomes more difficult to source, prices will inevitably rise and stones of this size will become a thing of the past.
This impressive Ocean Jasper cabochon makes a dramatic piece of jewellery and one that's not for the faint hearted.
