Dumortierite pendant from Stone Mania, an exciting collection of ladies gemstone pendants hand crafted by a small team of talented artisans with whom we've been working for almost twenty years. Each of the cabochons that we feature in our collection have been individually and meticulously chosen prior to them being mounted into their sterling silver settings.
One of our lesser known gemstone varieties, the colour and markings in some dumortierite can resemble denim hence it's sometimes referred to as the denim stone. It's widely documented that the mineral was first identified in 1881 by a French mineralogist who subsequently named it after the palaeontologist Eugène Dumortier but other than the fact that Mr Dumortier became more involved in geology around the age of 50, we cannot find any other documentation which explains why it was named after him.
Dumortierite is a light weight mineral that's also relatively hard so it's a great choice for use in gemstone jewellery. On Mohs scale of mineral hardness which the recognised scale for measuring the scratch resistance of one mineral against another, it grades 7 to 8 out of a maximum of ten.
This pretty dumortierite pendant has a slim design and is unusually light weight for a pendant of this size. The setting is fine sterling silver so it's advisable to keep it covered when not being worn in order to prevent it from tarnishing. All of our gemstone pendants come in their own stylish gift pouch.
