Black Mother of Pearl
Pretty black mother of pearl pendant crafted for Stone Mania in a simple sterling silver setting.
Mother of pearl consists primarily of the mineral aragonite and small amounts of a horn-like organic substance known as conchiolin. The black variety comes specifically from the black-lip shell which is a mollusc that produces black nacre.
Mother of pearl which is also known as nacre is a beautifully iridescent material that's only produced by certain molluscs. It's the lining of the interior of the shell and is the same material as that of a pearl. Black mother of pearl is tinged with a black colouration that comes and goes depending on the angle from which the shell is viewed. It's tough and resilient and being a shell is also very light weight.
Although referred to as a gemstone, black mother of pearl is an organic material which means it's produced naturally by organisms. Other examples of organic materials that are also classified as gemstones include pearl, bone, amber, coral and jet.
