This ladies azurite pendant features a carefully chosen gemstone which has been cut and polished as a cabochon and mounted exclusively for Stone Mania in a fine sterling silver setting.
Azurite is not considered to be a particularly rare mineral yet it's not found anywhere in the world in any great abundance. Both azurite and malachite are copper minerals which frequently occur together in and around copper mines. Azurite can exhibit the most intense blue colour which is the reason it has for thousands of years been used as a pigment in paint. The ancient Egyptians pulverized it and during the Middle Ages and Renaissance it was the blue colour in almost all European paintings. Over time and under the right conditions azurite can turn into malachite which is why some of the blue skies in those paintings now appear to have turned a shade of green. Most of the azurite from this period came from France and the word "azure" refers to a "bright blue colour" and historically it indicated a "blue dye".
Azurite is graded just 3½ to 4 on Mohs scale of mineral hardness so it's a soft stone which must be treated with care.
This polished azurite cabochon makes an elegant and eye catching ladies pendant and like all of the pendants in our collection, it was crafted by one of a small team of artisans with whom we have worked for many years.
