Ajooba Jasper Pendant
A distinctive Ajooba Jasper polished gemstone mounted as a pendant in a hand crafted sterling silver setting. The mustard coloured markings are particularly eye-catching and as with most varieties of jasper, this stone is opaque. Colours and markings in jasper are the result of various impurities and/or inclusions of other substances/minerals and for this reason, jasper is classified as a rock not a mineral.
A fine grained variety of cryptocrystalline quartz, jasper is known to have been used as a lapidary material for thousands of years and today, hundreds of different varieties are in circulation. It's popular as a gemstone and names that have been given to different varieties tend to make reference to colour, markings or the location where the stone is found. The name Ajooba Jasper seems to be a trade name created by stone cutters in Jaipur in India where a large percentage of the world's gemstones are cut and polished. We cannot find any official reference to the name and information about this particular stone is quite limited.
Although slightly larger, this cabochon has been finely cut therefore the pendant is neither chunky or heavy. It has been beautifully crafted and the colours in the stone give it a wonderful autumnal appearance.
