The subtle shades of green and yellow in this onyx stone pendant make it an ideal piece to wear during the warm summer months. This striking gemstone is highly translucent with a vitreous lustre so interacts with light beautifully. Crafted by hand exclusively for Stone Mania in a fine sterling silver setting, this natural onyx stone has been artificially coloured.
Onyx is a variety of agate which features straight alternating black and white bands that run parallel to each other. It's a translucent mineral that surprisingly is quite rare so for that reason it's often produced using pale coloured agate. Both onyx and agate are varieties of chalcedony but unlike onyx, the bands in agate are curved and often form chaotic patterns. When onyx occurs with red and white bands it's known as carnelian and stones that exhibit brown or white coloured bands are known as sardonyx.
Onyx was popular in Ancient Rome where it was used to carve magnificent cameos. Being a particularly porous stone means that throughout history it has been dyed and this practice continues today hence onyx can be found in almost any colour imaginable. Although black onyx does occur naturally it is extremely rare so the vast majority of material is dyed. Onyx very rarely occurs in any one single colour.
Although a slightly larger piece this ladies onyx pendant is light weight and has a relatively slim design. There is an indentation that runs vertically along the centre band on the back of the cabochon which has some dark colouration just below the surface. It's a natural anomaly which can be seen very slightly from the front but certainly doesn't spoil this piece. We have however taken this into consideration when calculating a price.
