Lapis Lazuli Pendant
Lapis Lazuli Pendant Necklace
Lapis lazuli cabochon mounted as a ladies pendant in fine sterling silver. This highly polished gemstone is subtly speckled with inclusions of the mineral pyrite also known as fool's gold and having been carefully cut is surprisingly light weight.
This distinctive blue coloured metamorphic rock has been prized as a gemstone since the time of the Pharaohs and the vast majority of the world's lapis lazuli is mined in Afghanistan. All of the stones featured in our ladies pendants come from Badakhshan in the far northeast of the country. This province is home to some of the oldest lapis mines in the world and the stone which travelled along trade routes to Ancient Egypt is believed to have come from this location.
Although often referred to as a mineral lapis lazuli is actually a rock because it's made up of several different minerals. The mineral lazurite is largely responsible for the stone's rich blue colour.
Having been carefully chosen, each stone is then transformed into a ladies pendant entirely by hand by one of a small team of talented artisans with whom we've been working for almost twenty years. When lapis lazuli is mounted in silver the metal tends to tarnish at a faster rate than with other gemstones but the exact reason for this remains a mystery. Pure silver doesn't tarnish but because it's such a soft metal it's almost always alloyed with other metals to make it more durable. Copper which is one of the most popular alloys is what actually tarnishes. The build-up can be minimised by keeping sterling silver covered as much as possible. This lapis lazuli pendant comes with its own gift pouch which is ideal for storage when it's not being worn.
