Grey Gemstone Pendant | Poppy Jasper
Grey coloured gemstones are relatively rare but surprisingly popular and the only pieces that we currently have in our collection are known as poppy jasper. Although primarily grey and white this highly polished cabochon also features subtle hues of yellow. Poppy jasper is a type of orbicular jasper which features quartz and feldspar both of which crystallize to form orbicular or spherical shaped structures. Several local names have been used to describe this material depending on where it was found the best known of which is owyhee jasper. This variety however which is mined on the Idaho Oregon border in the USA tends to exhibit stronger colours and large distinctive patterns.
Brightly coloured gemstones for use in jewellery are always in demand hence white and grey coloured material is often overlooked. It is for this reason that agate is sometimes dyed because although it can be very colourful, stones also occur in shades of of grey and white which are not considered to be colourful enough for the wider commercial market. Unlike agate jaspers are rarely dyed but finding attractive grey gemstones to use in jewellery is no easy task.
This eye-catching poppy jasper cabochon proves that minerals can be beautiful without having to exhibit strong colours. Although it can't be fully appreciated from our photo this white and grey coloured stone is highly polished and curiously tactile. It does have a very small "bobble" on the surface of the stone which although can be felt can hardly be seen.
This elegant ladies pendant has been crafted for Stone Mania in a fine sterling silver setting. We recommend that when not being worn it be kept covered to protect the gemstone from damage and to help minimise the build-up of tarnish on the silver. It comes complete with its own protective gift pouch that's perfect for this very purpose.
