Sodalite Pendant

Sodalite pendant crafted by hand for Stone Mania by one of a small team of talented artisans with whom we have been working for many years. Although a slightly larger piece, this ladies pendant has a slim design which makes it light weight for its size and particularly comfortable to wear. Our photograph doesn't give a true reflection of quite how slim the pendant is due to the angle at which the photo was taken but it measures just 0.6 millimetres from front to back.

Sodalite is graded 5 to 6 on Mohs scale of mineral hardness which means it's relatively hard so is perfect for use as a lapidary material.  Named for its high sodium content, sodalite was first discovered in the early 1800's and being a distinctive blue coloured gemstone, it's often mistaken for lapis lazuli. Sodalite however is lighter in weight, less expensive and can be found in greater abundance and in far more locations around the world.

Sodalite is often included with white or orange calcite which can create colourful and interesting patterns within the stone. It's one of only a handful of natural minerals that's used almost exclusively for ornamental purposes.  Being opaque means that it's usually cut as a cabochon but the very rare transparent crystals from Mont-Saint-Hilaire in Canada are faceted and are also highly sought after by collectors.

Blue gemstones have always been popular for use in ladies jewellery but sodalite is relatively unknown when compared to varieties such as sapphire, turquoise, kyanite, iolite and tanzanite to name just a few.
